As May comes to a close and schools wrap up their lessons for the year, a new season has arrived: It’s summertime in the Lowcountry! It’s a good thing the days are getting longer, because the calendar is packed this year with special events, concerts and more, all summer long. And if you live on Daniel Island, you don’t have to travel far to find some of the most exciting events in Charleston this season. Here are our top picks for things to do on Daniel Island this summer:

Attend Sundown on the Wando: A Riverfront Concert Series on Daniel Island

Mix and mingle at this free family-friendly concert series taking place on the banks of the Wando River. Pack a picnic and bring friends and family to enjoy live music as the sun sets. The action takes place from 6-9 pm. dicommunity.org

Give Back: The Rotary Charity Duck Race

Join the Rotary Club of Daniel Island, along with other area Rotary Clubs, for this annual charity duck race that raises money for local non-profit organizations, scholarships and Rotary programs. Remember a Friend: Philip Simmons’ 100th Birthday Celebration
June 7
Daniel Island Real Estate Sales Center
June marks the 100th birthday of Master Blacksmith Philip Simmons, who spent the first part of his childhood on Daniel Island. The Daniel Island Historical Society is marking the occasion with a special event featuring jazz, wine and light appetizers, and a drawing for special prizes. A commemorative, limited edition poster of Jonathan Green’s painting “Memory Dreams” will be available for purchase, and Mr. Green will also in attendance to sign posters.

 

Cast a Line: Daniel Island Kids’ Fishing Tournament

This annual Father’s Day weekend event is sponsored by Daniel Island’s Inshore Fishing Club and takes place on the banks of the lake at Smythe Park. Island children ages 5-15 are eligible to enter and cast for large-mouth bass, bream, mullet and red drum (all catch and release). Prizes will be awarded, and refreshments will be provided.

 

 

Challenge Your Kids: The Daniel Island Kids’ Triathlon

More than 100 kids ages 7-14 are expected to participate in this annual competition, featuring running, swimming and bicycling in Charleston’s island town. Each athlete receives a race bag and t-shirt, along with a finisher’s medal. The top three finishers in each age division will receive 1st, 2nd or 3rd prize medals. charleston-sc.gov

 

Experience Latin Culture: Siempre Mujer Music Festival

This celebration of hispanic culture features free daytime events and an evening concert. During the day, enjoy live latin music, salsa & rumba dancing, inspiring seminars, appearances by your favorite hispanic celebrities and much more, As the sun sets, Grammy-winning Salsa legend Gilberto Santarosa and the young Urban/Tropical duo from Venezuela, Chino y Nacho, will take the stage.
