Prayers and Support from Charleston’s Island Town
On June 17, 2015 our city experienced a soul-shattering event. The tragic shooting at downtown Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church rocked the Charleston community – along with the entire nation – to its core.
But sadly none have been more affected by this tragedy than those in the “Mother Emanuel” family and, in particular, the families of the nine victims who lost their lives. That is why the City of Charleston has established “The Mother Emanuel Hope Fund,” created to help financially support victims’ families and the Emanuel AME community.
In support of this effort, the Grants Committee of the Daniel Island Community Fund has approved a dollar-for-dollar match for the first $50,000 in funds contributed by members of the Daniel Island community. Anyone – residents, island businesses and friends near and far – can make a tax-deductible gift through the Daniel Island Community Fund for this campaign to help the victims’ families. Contributions must be made by Thursday, July 2 through the Daniel Island Community Foundation to contribute towards the $50,000 match goal.
Much like the greater Charleston community that it is part of, those living and working on Daniel Island have shown time and time again what they can do when they come together to support their neighbors. The power of community is alive and well in Charleston and on Daniel Island. We hope you’ll join us in our support of the victims of this tragedy through this island-led initiative.
To make a donation, please make your checks payable to the Daniel Island Community Foundation* and mail to:
