DI Speakers Series with Jim Newsome
January 30 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
On Wednesday evening January 30, Jim Newsome, President and CEO of the South Carolina Ports Authority, will be our speaker. The port is a key economic driver for the state of South Carolina. It accounts for $53 billion in economic activity every year or 10% of the state’s gross domestic product. It creates almost 200,000 jobs statewide. Port-supported jobs pay wages that are 40% higher than the state’s average. Its importance to the state and the Charleston area cannot be overstated.
Furthermore, port activity is growing rapidly. The volume of containers processed in November was a record. One of the largest container ships in the world, the CMA CGM Theodore Roosevelt, arrived in Charleston late last year. With the harbor deepening now underway there will be a steady increase in the number of giant post-Panamax container ships arriving at the Wando terminal. The Hugh K. Leatherman terminal in North Charleston is being built to accommodate more of these giant vessels on the Cooper River.
All of this matters to those of us on Daniel Island. The Ports Authority owns a huge plot of land on the south end of the island. The port-owned dredging site near the Don Holt bridge will become a repository for much of the silt from the dredging operations that are now underway. Virtually every truck going to or coming from the port crosses Daniel Island. Jim may shed some light on the port’s future plans. Join us and learn more about this crucial part of the Charleston economy.
Jim will speak on Wednesday evening, January 30. The event is at the Daniel Island Club, in the ballroom. Doors open at 6:30 pm; the program starts at 7:00 pm, and will conclude around 8:00 pm. Business casual attire is appropriate.
