The Daniel Island Club: Celebrating 15 Years

June 21, 2016

For 15 years the Daniel Island Club has been the symbolic heart of the Daniel Island Park neighborhood, providing members with everything they want and expect from a private, in-town country club. And later this week, the club will be celebrating the 15th anniversary of the grand opening of the clubhouse with a private gala for members at the clubhouse.

In preparation for this highly anticipated event, we are looking back at some of the most pivotal moments in the club’s history, from the opening of the clubhouse and completion of both the Beresford Creek course and Ralston Creek course to hosting the Nationwide Tour Championship from 2009 – 2011.

Grand Opening Of The Clubhouse

The club celebrated its official opening in May 2001 with the grand opening of the clubhouse. In 2005, with membership growing and interest in the clubhouse as a venue for events and weddings increasing, the club began a major expansion to include the ballroom and banquet kitchen to accommodate larger gatherings.

Five years later, it was decided another expansion was necessary to renovate the existing ladies locker room, open a new casual dining option – the Grill Room – and create a larger space for the men’s locker room and Golf Shop.

Today, the clubhouse is a favorite location for members and their guests to enjoy exceptional food and drinks, mingle with other members at special events throughout the year, or just sit back and relax!

Award-Winning Golf

The Beresford Creek course, designed by Tom Fazio, opened in 2001 with the Rees Jones-designed Ralston Creek course following suit in 2006. The two designers each crafted an 18-hole masterpiece set within the island’s stunning natural landscape, and both courses’ finishing holes flank the exquisite marsh-front clubhouse. The Daniel Island Club uniquely features the only private pairing of Fazio and Jones courses that both play from the same clubhouse.

Each course has received numerous awards over the years, including recognition from Golf Digest and Golfweek as two of the top residential and private golf courses in the U.S. In 2009 the Ralston Creek course hosted its first Nationwide Tour Championship with Matt Every winning the tournament and advancing onto the PGA Tour. Every would go one to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational on the PGA Tour in 2014 and 2015.
Later this month the club will be a qualifying location for the USGA Senior Open.

The Park Club

The Park Club opened in 2001 and is home to the club’s extensive tennis, fitness and aquatic programs. In the subsequent years, the Park Club has improved its amenities with additional tennis courts (including Charleston’s only grass court), a second resort-style pool and a current expansion of the state-of-the-art fitness center, which will be completed later this year. With these new improvements at the Park Club, the Daniel Island Club aspires to continue to provide wellness opportunities that positively impact members and their quality of life.

Social Gatherings

In the past 15 years the Daniel Island Club has hosted countless events for members of all ages. Celebrating the holidays at the club has become an annual tradition for many families, whether it’s an Easter Egg Hunt on club grounds, celebrating the 4th of July at the Park Club or the day-after Thanksgiving oyster roast. Kid members also enjoy a number of activities geared towards their age group, like movie nights, summer camps and junior golf and tennis tournaments. But it’s the annual Fall Hunt and Spring Member-Guest golf tournaments that hold the spots for most highly anticipated events each year with hundreds of golf members and guests competing on the Ralston Creek and Beresford Creek courses for the winning drive.

In recent years, the Daniel Island Club opened the Club Cottages for members and their guests, as well as introduced a transportation program that offers private shuttles to-and-from downtown Charleston. The clubhouse is an active gathering place where friends and family come together for special occasions, holidays or to just spend time with one another. And with the expansion and updates to the Park Club, members will have an updated space to fulfill their health and wellness goals for years to come.
