Daniel Island Speakers Series with Brian Hicks

November 6, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

On Wednesday evening November 6, the speaker will be Brian Hicks, the metro area columnist for the Post and Courier and a prolific book author. Brian is controversial. You may love him – or not – depending upon exactly what he wrote that day. In addition to his duties at the P&C Brian is an author with a seemingly insatiable curiosity. He has written books on a wide range of topics – Raising the Hunley, City of Ruin describes Charleston during the time of the Civil War, Toward the Setting Sun is about the Cherokees and the Trail of Tears, Into the Wind: Around Alone is a tale of single-handed round-the-world sailboat racing, Ghost Ship provides the true story of the brigantine sailing vessel Mary Celeste and her missing crew, and When the Dancing Stopped is a tragic tale aboard the glamorous cruise ship Morro Castle. He also traveled extensively with former Mayor Joe Riley and wrote his official biography, The Mayor: Joe Riley and the Rise of Charleston. His latest book is In Darkest South Carolina, the story of Federal Judge J. Waties Waring who four years before the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education launched a secret plan to end segregation in America.

Brian has been featured on National Public Radio and in major newspapers including the Boston Globe, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Chicago Tribune. He has been featured on the Discovery Channel, National Geographic and CBS Sunday Morning.

He has won more than two dozen journalism awards. In 1998 he was named S.C. Journalist of the year by the S.C. Press Association,a and in 2008 the Society of Professional Journalists named him as the best humor columnist in the Southeast.

He is originally from Cleveland and lives in Charleston with his wife Beth and their two sons, Cole and Nate.

Brian will speak on Wednesday evening, November 6. The event is at the Daniel Island Club, in the ballroom. Doors open at 6:30 pm; the program starts at 7:00 pm, and will conclude around 8:00 pm. Business casual attire is appropriate.
