December 8 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
This year’s Chanukah Celebration will be followed by “Candles and Candles” Solidarity Gathering Against Hate Crimes. The entire Daniel Island Community and people of all faiths are encouraged to attend.
The 7th annual public celebration of the Jewish Holiday of Chanukah on Daniel Island will take place on Saturday, December 8th from 4:30-5:30 PM at the entrance gate to the Volvo Car Stadium. This event will provide education and awareness about the Jewish Holiday of Chanukah for adults and children of the Daniel Island community by hosting an enjoyable Chanukah celebration and Menorah lighting ceremony.
Traditional Chanukah food and beverage will be served at the event along with traditional Jewish games and live music (provided by Black Tie Music Academy). The Menorah lighting ceremony, officiated by Rabbi Greg Kanter, will take place at approximately 5:15 PM. Alongside Rabbi Greg Kanter (Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim (KKBE) Reform Synagogue Charleston, SC), Chris Hamil (The Daniel Island POA), Pastor Jonathan Bennett (The Church of the Holy Cross, DI), Pastor David Woody (Providence Baptist Church, DI), and Pastor Paul Sorensen (Daniel Island Fellowship) will also be in attendance. Charleston’s Chief of Police Luther Reynolds will also be making some remarks.
“Candles and Candles” Solidarity Gathering Against Hate Crimes will begin approximately at 5:30 PM. Clergy and other notables will speak out against hate crimes, including the murder of 11 Jews at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh and 9 worshipers at Mother Emanuel Church here in Charleston. Candles will be available to light in memory of those who were killed.
The event is free and open to the entire Daniel Island Community and persons of all faiths are welcome to attend. Accommodations have been made in case of inclement weather as this is a rain or shine event.
