Are Daniel Island and Charleston Residents Among the Country’s Most Generous?
Tuesday, May 5th was National Giving Day, a 24-hour Internet crowdfunding event that benefited thousands of charities in participating communities around the country. From Seattle, Washington to Palm Beach, Florida, hundreds of communities rallied to give back to thousands of local non-profit organizations by incenting residents to take advantage of one-day matching donations.
On Daniel Island, the Daniel Island Community Foundation and many of the island’s residents and employees participated in a variety of ways. In one effort, employees of Daniel Island Real Estate, the Daniel Island Company, the Daniel Island Property Owners’ Association and the Daniel Island Club were encouraged to participate by an offer of additional matching funds for employee contributions for Giving Day. Nearly 30 individuals participated in this effort, which alone raised more than $4,000 for a dozen participating charities.
If a community’s spirit can be defined by its generosity, Giving Day proved that residents of the Lowcountry have a big heart. Of communities participating nationwide, the Coastal Carolina effort was second only to Seattle, with nearly $7.2 million raised for 179 coastal Carolina non-profit organizations.
It’s wonderful to see so many individuals on Daniel Island and in Charleston coming together to give back to the community. For more information about Lowcountry Giving Day, click here.
