A New Community Resource For Neighbors In Need

October 30, 2015

A new resource for residents and neighbors in need in the Cainhoy and Huger area of Berkeley County has opened, thanks to the support of several Daniel Island contributors. East Cooper Community Outreach opened the doors to its new satellite program at 1161 Baldwin Corner Road in Huger this fall. The Baldwin Carson Community Outreach Center offers medical, dental and health education programs and screenings, along with computer classes and other programs.

The new satellite office for East Cooper Community Outreach was made possible by several partnering sponsors, including the Daniel Island Community Fund, Nucor Steel, Shawn Jenkins, Benefitfocus, Christ Our King Catholic Church, Google, BP and the Wando-Huger Community Fund of the Coastal Community Foundation of SC.

More than $350,000 was raised to cover three years of operating support and funds to renovate a 3,600 square foot building on Baldwin Corner Road that was formerly home to a Head Start program. In order to meet the needs and interests of the community, the facility was outfitted with two medical examination rooms, a commercial instructional cooking kitchen, a community room, and a classroom equipped with 12 computers. It will also house an office for Operation Home and other future non-profit partners. The goal is for the center to become a “one stop” nonprofit center for residents in the Huger, Cainhoy and Wando communities.

The mission of East Cooper Community Outreach is to provide safety net services to low-income neighbors, while empowering them to create better lives for themselves, their families, and their communities. Founded in 1989 as an emergency relief effort after the devastation from Hurricane Hugo, the organization strives to eliminate poverty in the East Cooper region, and focuses on three main program areas: Basic Needs, Health Services, and Empowerment and Education. More than 4,500 households annually receive assistance for food, clothing, household goods, and financial aid, along with access to dental and medical care, treatment for chronic diseases, prescription assistance, health education, counseling, financial literacy classes, savings programs, job readiness training, and a range of specialized employment services.
