Daniel Islanders Gave Back In A Big Way In 2017

January 9, 2018

2017 was a very active year for philanthropy on Daniel Island. Our community’s primary financial resources for providing services to neighbors in need – the Daniel Island Community Fund and Daniel Island Community Foundation – funded more than $900,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations and for community initiatives and events in 2017.

A diverse variety of more than 30 local non-profit organizations benefited from the 2017 Daniel Island community grants. Ranging from veteran housing assistance and education to animal services and feeding the hungry, these organizations provide invaluable services to our neighbors here on Daniel Island and beyond.

Additionally, the DICF supported 46 community events and programs on Daniel Island, ranging from special POA-hosted events that take place here in our community to special projects and activities hosted by clubs and groups that operate on Daniel Island. Examples include the Glow For It 5K, a Halloween Pumpkin Walk, the annual Daniel Island Holiday Festival and a holiday Light the Night luminary event.

Although the money distributed by the DICF is typically focused on serving local residents on Daniel Island and in surrounding neighborhoods, one community-wide philanthropic highlight from 2017 involved raising money to assist hurricane victims in other states. This fall, money raised by members of the Daniel Island community was matched by the DICF, resulting in a $20,000 donation to the Red Cross for hurricane relief in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico.

The Daniel Island Community Fund is a private 501 (c) 4 organization that is financially supported by a Community Enhancement Fee on all resale transactions on the island. The structure of the DICF allows its financial resources to grow as the island grows, creating a legacy for the community for generations to come. The Daniel Island Community Foundation is a 501(c)3 that allows individuals and businesses to financially support the initiatives of the Daniel Island Community Fund.
