How We Celebrate Independence In Charleston’s Island Town
Here on Daniel Island, we celebrate our country, our freedom and our nation’s birthday each year by aiming to make Charleston’s island town the “Most Patriotic Town in America.” Island residents, the Property Owners’ Association and several non-profit organizations come together to turn Daniel Island into a sea of red, white and blue, and to participate in several celebratory events. Here’s a taste of what it looks like – read further for details on this year’s festivities:
Field of Honor
Beginning on June 25th, the Exchange Club of Daniel Island hosts the annual Daniel Island Field of Honor®, a display of 500 full-sized U.S. flags on the grassy lawns of River Landing Drive. Each flag is mounted on a seven and a half foot flagpole to honor military, veterans, first responders and other personal and home town heroes, making it possible to walk beneath the flags. It’s a dramatic and inspiring installation that remains on display for the two weeks surrounding July 4th each year. The Field of Honor must be experienced in person to fully appreciate its impact, and visitors are welcome to walk amongst the flags free of charge.
The celebration kicks into high gear on July 3rd, when the annual Patriotic Community Parade begins at 5:00 pm. Bikes, wagons, strollers, golf carts and residents (and pets!) of all ages get decked out in red, white and blue to participate in a spirited ride and walk through the neighborhoods.
Smythe Park Concerts & Fireworks
This year, the parade concludes at Smythe Park, where there will be patriotic performances from the Charleston Community Band and the Andrew Thielen Big Band Orchestra on the banks of Smythe Lake. There are all kinds of food and fun planned, from BBQ and sweet treats to crafts, face painting, balloon art and more. The evening ends with a fireworks display over the lake.
Poolside Celebration & Cookout
But that’s not all! On the 4th residents will gather at Pierce Park for a poolside celebration and cookout complete with family entertainment, pool games and a dj spinning tunes.
If you’re lucky enough to live here – or to be visiting around the July 4th holiday, you don’t want to miss being part of what surely must be one of America’s most patriotic displays of support for our nation and our freedom!
